Quick-fire questions with Head Brewer Tim Butler

We caught up with Pennine Brewing’s award-winning head brewer, Tim Butler, for a few quick-fire questions:
Beer most proud of?
Black Forest. It’s a lovely dark amber beer that’s won gold at the Society for Independent Brewers — although I’m proud of them all.
Go-to hop?
Fuggle. It’s robust and versatile.
Most underrated beer style?
English pale ale… you can’t beat a best bitter.
Pint after a shift at work?
Pacific. It’s a New Zealand-inspired beer we brew — its balance is just fabulous.
Beer myth you’d most like to bust?
When people think brewers make a bad pint. We don’t — it’s all about how the landlord keeps the beer. Beer is a living and breathing product.
What makes Pennine Brewing so special?
The dedication, passion and commitment of everyone. We’re fiercely proud and independent.
Pub fire or beer garden?
You can’t beat a pint of best bitter in front of a warm fire in a traditional pub.
How do you feel about being affectionately known as the “mad scientist”?
I’ve been called worse things.
If Pennine Brewing was a band, what band would it be?
The Mavericks — they’re jolly people just like us.
